MATTHEW ALLEN
Available works;
Matthew Allen, a contemporary artist known for his innovative use of polished graphite on linen, explores the interplay between materiality, light, and perception. His meticulous artworks are characterized by the gradual layering and hand-polishing of powdered graphite to achieve atmospheric mirror-like surfaces that actively engage with their surroundings through reflection and subtle textural contrasts. His work invites viewers into a contemplative interaction, offering them an exploration of the nuanced interplay between visibility and obscurity. Allen's art, marked by a profound attention to materiality and process, ultimately seeks to evoke a sense of depth and introspection, highlighting the shifting balance between the tangible and the indeterminable in the physical world.

Matthew Allen (b.1981 Auckland, New Zealand) lives and works in Sydney, Australia and attended the Sydney College of Arts, graduating with a Master of Visual Arts in 2006. He was the recipient of The Moya Dyring Studio, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Cités des Arts residency, Paris in 2012 and the Mark Rothko, Latvia residency in 2014.
