GIBNEY
Billy Gibney (b. 1995, Melbourne) is an Australian artist whose painting practice explores memory and perception, examining the ways personal and collective experiences become attached to particular images and objects. Drawing on the instability of imagery as a vessel for memory, Gibney creates works not as fixed representations of reality, but as fragmented records.
Through an excavative process, his works draw from personal photographs, film stills, found imagery, online auctions, objects, and historical archives, often focusing on images that carry an ambiguous sense of familiarity or emotional residue. Recent works extend these ideas through materiality, combining oil paint with volcanic rock, marble dust, wax, and crushed glass to create dense, textured, fossil-like surfaces that carry traces of memory and process.
Gibney has exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally. Recent solo and duo exhibitions include Plan X Gallery, Milan (2024); MXM Galeria, Madrid (2024); Michael Reid, Sydney (2023); and Oigåll Projects, Melbourne (2022).
Recent group exhibitions include IOMO, Bucharest (2026); MXM Galeria, Madrid (2026); The Untitled Void, Seoul (2026); Moosey, London (2025); Morris Adjmi, New York (2024); Marian Cramer, Amsterdam (2024).
